As more and more jobs become digitized, it has become quite common to see artificial intelligence (AI) bots crop up in various industries. In White Castle, for instance, drive-thru staff seem to have been replaced with AI. But as one customer (@truckerboyju) discovers, this can leave room for all kinds of errors.
The customer filmed the bizarre happenings for TikTok, and the clip has since amassed 5.2 million views.
In the video, which was filmed in a car, the White Castle drive-thru screen showed the order total as $147.60, despite him only ordering a Number 12 Combo. Based on the screen, it seemed like the TikToker ordered 11 No. 12 Combos in total.
Speaking to the AI assistant directly, the befuddled TikToker says, “It says $147. Why does it say that?”
The order screen then started to reload. But when it came back, things got a lot worse. The machine had added 100 No. 7 Combos to the order, which increased the price to $15,400. Almost mockingly, the automated voice then innocently asks, “What drink would you like in your number 12 combo?”
By this point, the TikToker had had enough. “What the f—, give me a team member?” he asks. “What the f—?”
Commenters Share Their Own Views On AI Drive-Thru Registers
In the comments, users were pretty scathing about this technology.
“Killing the planet for this,” one quipped.
“Some fast food workers were laid off for this technology btw,” another added.
A third shared, “I’ve stopped going to places that use AI in their drive-thrus like pay your workers and hire more people instead of using something that pollutes our environment.”
A fourth opined that “AI is for data sorting. It was never for human interaction.” Similarly, a fifth wrote, “Stop going to places that replace people with technology, stop supporting those companies! Do it for your community and do it for the working class.”
The White Castle AI Drive-Thru
White Castle introduced AI drive-thrus back in the summer of 2023. When Axios’ Tyler Buchanan tried to use the register for his order, the AI bot made similar mistakes, such as adding random items, but on a lesser scale.
Since then, it seems like not a lot has changed.
But with AI being more endorsed than ever, White Castle might be due for an upgrade.
