TikTok is an endless well of new information. One woman who uses men’s razors—as a lot of women do—shared with the masses a little-known feature on Gillette and many other men’s razors that she learned through her uncle. Apparently, not even all men know about this feature.
“So, I use a men’s razor, and I just learned something new that I had no idea about,” TikTok creator Madisyn (@madicelina) starts. Her video has almost 200,000 views.
She holds up a Gillette ProGlide Razor. “I was replacing the head, and [my uncle] was like, ‘Oh yeah. I use the back of the razor. When I shave, I shave like this,’” she shares, pretending to shave her face with the back of the razor.
Then, the content creator zooms in on the backside of the razor. There’s a singular blade there. “Apparently, right here is a blade,” she says, baffled. According to Gillette’s website, this is the “precision trimmer.” The precision trimmer is used for styling facial hair and removing hair from hard-to-reach places. Typically, trimmers are used as the final step in the shaving process to shape facial hair. But they can also be used to cut down long hairs on legs.
The Hack In Action
Naturally, Madisyn decides to try it out herself. “I’m gonna shave part of my arm to see if it actually works,” she says, pulling up her jacket sleeve. Placing the back of the blade against her arm, she gently glides it four times. When the content creator checks it, she is flabbergasted.
“There’s hair!” she says, unveiling the blonde hairs sticking out of the blade. “Oh, my god! Why did I have no idea there’s a razor on the back?”
“You’ll learn something new every day,” Madisyn states. “Let me know if you knew this.”
“Life hack for anyone that didn’t know!” she adds in the caption.
Did Viewers Know About The Hack?
This was news to both male and female viewers.
“That explains why I randomly have cuts on my fingers after shaving. I had no idea!” TikToker @lethalbarbie wrote.
“WHAT?! I’ve been using men’s razors (the one you’re holding) for 10+ years & had no idea,” another viewer named Brooke remarked.
“I’m a man and I’ve never known this,” a third named Timothy stated.
“I’ve been shaving for almost 10 years and I didn’t even know this,” another male viewer shared.
Meanwhile, those who already knew about this feature shared how they learned about it the hard way.
“Unfortunately only knew this because I’ve cut the [s—] out of myself on it before HAHA,” one commenter revealed.
“I found out they had a blade on the back the hard way when I shaved my eyebrow off,” a second recalled.
Do All Razor Brands Have This Feature?
Not all brands have this feature.
Gillette was the first one to release a razor with the precision trimmer. In 2005, the brand introduced the Fusion 5 Precision Trimmer to help men obtain an accurate shave. Then, Harry’s released its own version in 2013, followed by Venus in 2018.
Men’s Vs. Women’s Razors
Appearance-wise, men’s and women’s razors are nearly identical. But they have subtle differences in their design, handle length, grip, and weight distribution, per Rose Skin Co. Since men’s razors are designed to cut thick and coarse facial hair, the blades are often spaced more closely together.
Women’s razors generally cost more through a gender-based price discrepancy called the “Pink Tax.: This isn’t an actual law, but rather a phenomenon where prices for women’s self-care products are retailed at a higher price than men’s. According to Consumer Reports, female razors are 11% more expensive than their male equivalent.
For Gillette, it claimed the different price points come down to “differences in technology, materials, manufacturing, and promotional factors” in response to a Lumafield article about the pink tax.
Due to the more affordable cost and the reputation that men’s razors are superior, many women opt for them.
