Tesla cars will soon let you play games while they drive themselves says Elon Musk

Elon Musk has teased a major update coming to Tesla’s in-car experience, the ability to play video games while the car drives itself.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Tesla CEO said that in-car gaming during Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode could become a reality in a few months, but only if it clears local regulations.

“Probably 3 to 6 months, depending on regulatory approval in your city and state,” Musk wrote in a reply to a fan. This feature would only be available in regions where Tesla’s autonomous driving system is fully approved.

While the current FSD requires driver supervision, Musk’s comments suggest the company is targeting full autonomy, and regulators will have the final say.

Tesla cars to have gaming support

It’s the latest step in Tesla’s push to turn its vehicles into entertainment hubs. Past updates added support for video streaming apps, and some earlier Model S and X vehicles even allowed users to play Steam games directly from the dashboard.

However, Tesla quietly removed Steam support from newer vehicles in mid-2024, with newer models no longer including the hardware required to run PC-level games. Even for those with supported models, gameplay was only possible while parked.

Musk’s comments come just months after Tesla officially launched its first Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The fully autonomous ride-hailing system currently operates in select areas of the city, with all fares temporarily set at a flat rate of $4.20 USD.

Despite the lack of a driver behind the wheel, a Tesla employee rides along in the passenger seat for safety oversight. As Tesla continues its push into autonomous transport and in-car entertainment, new features like gaming in FSD mode signal where the company is aiming next.

So, you may soon be able to chip away at your Steam backlog while you’re travelling, which would certainly make those long car rides more enjoyable.
