Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok just got a new anime-inspired update, and fans think they’ve spotted a familiar influence – Death Note’s Misa Amane.
Grok’s recent transformation into a digital anime-style character has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many users pointing out similarities to Misa, one of the most recognizable characters from the hit anime Death Note.
Misa is known for her gothic fashion and bold personality. Her visual style has become iconic in anime culture, and anime fans are loving the resemblance to Grok’s new look.

The change comes as part of Grok’s new Companions feature, which was introduced on July 14, 2025, in the iOS version of the Grok app. It allows users to interact with animated avatars, including Ani, a gothic anime-style girl, and Bad Rudy, a red panda-style companion.
As you can imagine, it’s Ani who has quickly led the charge when it comes to sheer popularity. “Omg Ani, Grok’s new AI companion, is literally Misa from Death Note,” wrote one excited fan. Others mentioned that Ani “looks a thousand times better than Misa.”
Although there’s no official confirmation that Ani was inspired by Misa Amane, fans have drawn clear comparisons in viral posts across social media. So far, X users have been uploading videos highlighting how expressive Ani is, while others have shared more suggestive content that I won’t be sharing in this article, but trust me, it’s the Wild West out there.
Ani’s popularity has proven so big that as of July 15, Grok is currently ranked second in the Productivity category, while the app is now ranked number one in Japan and Hong Kong. Who said that waifus don’t sell?
Whether the resemblance to Death Note’s Misa was intentional or not, it’s clear the update has struck a chord with anime fans and helped Grok go viral once again.
