Australia has historically trailed only the United States when it comes to the countries with the most shark attacks on an annual basis. However, the former is leading the pack this year and saw the margin grow thanks to a scary incident where a surfer charged into the water to ward off a predator who sent a teenager to the hospital with multiple bites.
According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, there were a total of 47 unprovoked shark bites recorded around the world in 2024 (down from 69 the previous year).
28 of those transpired in the United States (which included one fatality), while Australia came in second place due to the nine people who fell victim to an attack in the vicinity of the island nation’s more than 40,000 miles of coastline.
As of the start of last weekend, America was the runner-up in 2025 with six unprovoked incidents, while Australia was narrowly ahead with seven—a tally that’s unfortunately grown to eight due to what unfolded at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales on Sunday.
According to 9 News, a 16-year-old boy was near the shore when he was attacked by a shark that bit into his bicep, wrist, and leg before a number of surfers scrambled to his aid—including one who could be seen lunging toward the animal and striking it multiple times as a couple of other people dragged the victim toward the beach.

The outlet says an off-duty paramedic was one of the beachgoers who attended to the unnamed boy and used a rope from one of the surfboards as a tourniquet to stabilize him before he was placed in the ambulance that transported him to the helicopter that flew him to a hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
Eyewitnesses say the shark was approximately seven feet long and likely of the tiger or bull variety based on the black coloring. However, the species has not been confirmed, and responders who surveyed the area from the air in the wake of the attack were unable to spot one fitting the description.
