TikTok continues to turn old songs into new hits. Case in point: Coldplay’s 25-year-old song, “Sparks,” has entered the Hot 100 for the first time after it was used in a viral video about frontman Chris Martin’s reported breakup from longtime partner Dakota Johnson.
As Billboard points out, a recent live performance of the track in Las Vegas was turned into a TikTok video with the caption, “When you don’t want to believe the breakup rumors but this was Chris during sparks tonight.” The viral clip has since spawned more than 500,000 additional videos using “Sparks” as their soundtrack. This groundswell of attention was enough to send “Sparks” to No. 93 on the Hot 100, marking the first time that the track from Coldplay’s 2000 album, Parachutes, has landed on the chart.

While never officially released as a single, “Sparks” has long been a Coldplay fan favorite and a mainstay during the band’s live shows. In 2005, the song received a minor boost in popularity after being featured in the hit comedy Wedding Crashers.
The renewed interest in “Sparks” has also helped Parachutes re-enter the Billboard 200 at No. 169.
Coldplay’s current 2025 North American tour picks up again in Toronto on July 7th, with dates in Boston, Madison, Wisconsin, and Nashville before wrapping up in Miami. See the full itinerary below, and get tickets here.
