In May, Primus shared “Little Lord Fentanyl,” the legendary alternative-funk-metal outfit’s first new recording since 2022’s Conspiranoid EP. Today, they’ve given the triumphant return to the studio a 7” record pressing, backed with a new live version of “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread),” which together read as a celebration of their chemistry with new drummer John Hoffman.

“Little Lord Fentanyl” is Primus’ first studio recording with Hoffman and features guest vocals from Maynard James Keenan, who debuted the track with the trio on their Sessanta V.2.0 co-headline tour with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. The cut spirals out from a slouching shuffle of Les Claypool’s bent slap-bass and Hoffman’s frisky dashes of percussion, building to a dark fantasy with minor bolts from guitarist Larry LaLonde and Keenan’s falsetto.

The version of Brown Album essential “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)” was captured live at Philadelphia’s Mann Center and spotlights Hoffman’s precise, dynamic performance. The song holds some significance to the drummer and his new bandmates as Hoffman was the sole candidate in the Interstellar Drum Derby audition contest to select the song, instantly demonstrating his unique perspective on the Primus catalog. “He’s the only one that picked it, and he fucking killed it,” Claypool shared.

Primus’ “Little Lord Fentanyl” single is available to pre-order now, and will be available on the road during the band’s imminent Onward & Upward summer tour with Ty Segall and MonoNeon. Find tickets and more information at primusville.com
