A man by the name of Sal decided to document his weight loss and hold himself accountable, opting to start his own YouTube channel instead of going on a show like ‘My 600lb Life.’ Now, he’s got over 4 million views on his YouTube channel and a career path as a fitness influencer.
Sal has shown up in collaboration with various big fitness YouTubers, telling his story and locking in on his weight loss journey. Big creators like Will Tennyson, ObeseToBeast and Golden Balance have featured him in their content, giving him assistance and helping him with things like exercise and meal planning.
And, though being featured alongside big creators surely helped him out, Sal’s been putting in his own work and building a huge following.
Now, after losing almost 150lbs since his first upload on October 23, 2024, he’s got a big enough following that he’s been able to turn weight loss into an actual, full-time career.
Sal turns a near-death experience into a career
Sal almost died when he weighed over 725 pounds as a result of diabetic ketoacidosis and was rushed to the hospital. Then, a few weeks later, his heart almost stopped, and he had to once again be hospitalized at risk of death.
A short time after that, he lost his job. This is when his mother came in and decided to pay for his life fully until he lost the weight, which served as a huge wake-up call for him. Sal began making videos at that point, mostly to hold himself accountable and stay on the right path.
“I thought it would be a good idea, through the encouragement of friends and family, to start recording this journey in case it helps just one person,” he said in his first video. Sal’s come a long way since then.
Things really blew up with him when he did a video with massively popular fitness YouTuber Will Tennyson.
This video garnered over 3 million views within a month, giving Sal a huge boost to his following and a ton of people cheering him on to lose the weight.
“Will quite literally changed my life. Forever. I am forever indebted to him, and I could never repay him for what he did for me and my family. It almost moves me to tears when I talk about it… It’s unreal,” he said in a viewer Q&A.
YouTube ObeseToBeast has also been helping him with grocery shopping and making healthy choices as a fellow influencer who went through a similar journey, giving Sal inspiration and advice on how to get to a healthy weight.
He’s gone from 725lbs to 576lbs in his most recent weight reveal, a loss of 149lbs since he started. And, though his mom paid for him to make losing weight his full-time goal, Sal is in the process of turning this journey into a genuine career.
With 3.9 million YouTube views to his name, viral TikToks with millions of likes in some cases, and a loyal following across several social media platforms, Sal’s doing pretty well for himself considering he started less than a year ago.
He’s also directly working with Transcend, the gym he started at, with a direct partnership that allows him to focus on weight loss full-time while taking some of the financial burden off of his family.
