Elon Musk launches self-driving ‘Robotaxis’ & every trip costs $4.20

Tesla has rolled out its Robotaxi service that allows customers to travel in a self-driving vehicle within select areas. To mark the launch, all fares are currently $4.20 USD.

With Elon Musk teasing the launch of the Robotaxi earlier this month, the self-driving service from Tesla has now launched in Texas. Despite the June 22 rollout in the state, there’s no quite telling when it may be available in other locations.

Currently, this service is only available in “select areas” of Austin, and to be a customer, you need to get an early access invitation to be among the first to try out the Robotaxi App and test out the “driverless experience.”

As for the pricing, the service itself costs a $4.20 flat fee for customers, at least at this point in time. So, if you’re among those with early access, you can take advantage of the flat fee regardless of how long your trip may be. This has been confirmed by Elon Musk himself via a post on X.

How does a Robotaxi work?

At first glance, using a Robotaxi is like your standard Uber. Customers will first need to download the app and use their Tesla Account to sign in. Once that’s sorted, they’ll be able to enter their destination within the area that’s currently supported by the service on the app.

From there on, the vehicle will pick them up, and they can fasten their seatbelt or tap “Start” in the app to begin the trip after getting inside. The major difference here is, of course, there’s nobody to drive behind the steering wheel. Instead, it’s just an empty seat.

That said, it’s worth noting that this service runs under the supervision of Tesla employees. So, even while the driving is automated, there’s a staff member in the vehicle sitting in the other front seat, accompanying the passenger in case of emergency. As we’ve already seen on the first day, the AI driver isn’t flawless.

During the trip, the customers can stop their ride before reaching their destination by tapping the “Pull Over” option on the app, which will lead to the vehicle stopping at the “nearest and safest location.”

In terms of availability, the Robotaxi service is only available during select hours, operating from 6 AM to 12 AM CT, according to the official website.

Since its launch, clips of influencers using this service have already been flooding social media. Some have dubbed the experience as “comfortable” and “smooth.”
