Heavy Song of the Week: Biohazard's "Forsaken"

Heavy Song of the Week is a feature on Heavy Consequence breaking down the top metal, punk, and hard rock tracks you need to hear every Friday. This week, No. 1 goes to Biohazard’s comeback single “Forsaken.”

After reuniting with their classic lineup three years ago, Biohazard have finally released new music in the form of “Forsaken,” their first track in over a decade.

The band sounds as ferocious as ever — if not more so, thanks to the modern production and its massive soundstage — melding lean bouts of thrash against D-beat hardcore and pit churning breakdowns. The passage of time has made singer-guitarist Billy Graziadei’s bark even more grizzled and Lemmy-esque, and he still commands a menacing presence on the mic and onstage, as seen in the raucous performance clip that accompanied the single — the first tease of the band’s forthcoming album.

Honorable Mentions:

The Armed – “Kingbreaker”

Arriving just days after the nationwide “No Kings” protests, “Kingbreaker” is a two-minute burst of fevered aggression from politically-charged Detroit hardcore collective The Armed, who notably performed at a Bernie Sanders rally earlier this year. The full force of the ensemble is in effect here, from pummeling drums by Urian Hackney to the shrieks of Patrick Shiroishi’s saxophone and the dual vocal scream-shout onslaught of Meghan O’Neil and Tony Wolksi.

Revocation – “Cronenberged”

Ah, to be “Cronenberged.” Perhaps melted in a vat of acid, or maybe set upon by parasites that bore into the eye sockets. There’s a particular imagery to the body horror of David Cronenberg, and for a death metal band like Revocation, such deformities and man-made atrocities make for apt lyrical content — in this case, a story about “a science experiment gone wrong.” Adding another layer of sonic filth to the mix is Jonny Davy of Job for a Cowboy, who provides guest gutturals.

SCALP – “Conspiracy”

The hardcore floweth this week, and California’s SCALP also dished out an absolute scorcher with the lead single from their newly announced album Not Worthy of Human Compassion. These guys are a bit more grindy than your average HxC act, throwing down minute-long tracks that traverse a lot of sonic territory in a short span. It helps that the deathgrind-y parts are played at about a-billion BPM, accelerating the most brutal portions of the song before the breakdown drops to halftime and hits like a hammer.
