The tradition continued!
To mark the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary and long-lasting legacy, the band, in partnership with Rhino Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing, announces the 2025 theatrical event, “Meet-Up At The Movies.” Set to screen at select cinemas and IMAX, the group’s eponymous concert movie, The Grateful Dead Movie, will air on August 14.
The fan favorite film presents the band, Jerry Garcia, Bobby Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Godchaux, Keith Godchaux, and Mickey Hart, fresh off his ‘70s era hiatus, at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October 1974. The concerts were initially believed to be the band’s last, billed as their “farewell run” after an extensive decade on the road.
While that theory was disproved with their 1976 return, the five-show run at the Winterland proved a valiant display, culminating in one final night, known as “The Last One.” Included are exemplary live performances parsed with psychedelic animation, interviews with band members and crew, and fan inclusion to present the group’s beloved status among deadheads.
The forthcoming theatrical arrival will mark the first time Jerry Garcia’s co-directed film has returned to the big screen in eight years. As a bonus, attendees are encouraged to watch the full production for the exclusive cinematic premiere of “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider,” a bonus live performance from the October 1974 Winterland shows not included in the official film release.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux said of the IMAX viewing, “It was the greatest screening I’ve ever experienced of a film I’ve seen hundreds of times.”
“The Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies has always been a time-honored tradition for Trafalgar Releasing and the Dead Head community,” said Kymberli Frueh, SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing. “This year’s event is especially transportive as we celebrate the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary by bringing The Grateful Dead Movie back to cinemas and to IMAX screens for the first time ever. We hope fans join us to relive the magic, the music, and the spirit of the Dead like never before.”
