Actress Samantha Williams chatted about starring in “Pirates! The Penzance Musical” on Broadway.
‘Pirates! The Penzance Musical’
On her experience in the musical, she exclaimed, “I’ve been having the best time putting this musical on its feet!”
“The rehearsal process, led by our incredible director Scott Ellis, was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in a rehearsal room,” she noted.
“From sword fighting to finding our ‘bits,’ every single day was a new adventure.
Getting to this show every night has been an absolute blessing,” she added.
Playing Mabel in the show
Williams is drawn to playing Mabel in the show for several reasons. “I love how in tune Mabel is with her sensuality,” she admitted.
“Mabel is all things demure like most ingenues from the G&S era, but has a fiery spark that makes her headstrong and willing to go for what (who) she wants,” she explained.
Favorite part of the experience
On her favorite part of this experience, she remarked, “I always respond the same to this question. The people… the people… the people.”
“From the cast to the crew to the creatives to everyone in the house, they are my favorite part of every day,” she noted.
Daily motivations as an actress
Regarding her daily motivations as an actress, she said, “My passion for the craft motivates me every day. I am obsessed with the art of storytelling.”
“It’s amazing to me that no matter how much we’ve evolved as humans our stories remain the same to their core. Family, love, and hardship… the list goes on,” she said.
“Telling stories is how we’ve always kept the world spinning, and I hold my role as a
storyteller with honor and responsibility,” she added.
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, Williams said, “This is a deep question. Sometimes, it’s awesome. I’ve gotten jobs through social media, and it’s been a great way to connect with like-minded artists and share art easily.”
“That said, social media can be extremely stifling for artists as it can be so easy to unfairly compare ourselves to others,” she acknowledged.
“It’s definitely a double edged sword. I feel like I lean toward the side of it not being too helpful for me,” she elaborated.
Advice for young and aspiring actors
For young and emerging actors, she said, “Keep going. No career is linear. There will be ups and downs, peaks and valleys, but that’s all a part of the journey of being a true artist!”
“You have the power to create. That is so special. Hold it close, protect it, and use it,” she added.
Success
On her definition of the word success, she said, “There are so many definitions of success. For me, I feel most successful when I am making art I love and getting paid for it. Ha! Simple as that.”
Closing thoughts on the musical
For fans and viewers, she remarked, “I hope people leave our show feeling absolute joy.”
“We are inviting a new generation of theatergoers to the land of Gilbert and Sullivan. Our musical is the perfect blend of jazz and opera! If you want to hear some of your favorite G&S classics with a twist, come see us,” she elaborated.
“With everything going on in the world, it’s important for audiences to be able to
escape for a bit and dive into a story about joy, family, and love,” she concluded.
