H. Jon Benjamin, the famed voice actor who has provided the voices for Sterling Archer in Archer and Bob Belcher in Bob’s Burgers, says his long-running role as the latter has affected the way he speaks in real life. Benjamin says that after almost 15 years of voicing the character, he’s now “become Bob.”

During a recent interview, H. Jon Benjamin was discussing how he broke into the industry and recalled working with eventual Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard on the late 90s/early 2000s animated Comedy Central series Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.

Benjamin said that once Bouchard began developing his own shows — in addition to Bob’s Burgers, he’s also created Home Movie, Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil, and Central Park — he continued reaching out to have him voice characters, eventually leading to his lead role in Bob’s Burgers.

Bob’s Burgers first premiered in 2011 and has been on the air for almost 15 years. As such, Benjamins say that he’s now essentially become Bob.

“’I was living in Boston doing comedy. This comedian, Jonathan Katz, started doing the show Dr. Katz and I auditioned for that,’” Benjamin told Variety.

“[Bob’s Burgers creator Loren] Bouchard, then an editor on Dr. Katz, began developing his own shows and continued calling on Benjamin to voice his characters. ‘I just kept working with him,” Benjamin says. “So, he gave me the part [of Bob], I said yes, and it hasn’t stopped in 30 years.’”

“Benjamin admits he didn’t always sound like Bob. ‘I didn’t sound like this at all 15 years ago,’ he says with a laugh. ‘Now I talk like Bob… I’ve become him.’”

Bob’s Burgers has become a mainstay of the adult animated comedy landscape having been on the air for 14 years since premiering in 2011.

The 15th season of Bob’s Burgers returned to the air following its mid-season hiatus on May 18 and is set to run through July 31, which will take it to its 295th episode.
