With Bonnaroo canceled due to weather, Grace Bowers and Tal Wilkenfeld joined Mt. Joy for a pop-up show in Nashville. They played for almost two hours without a set break at the sold-out Brooklyn Bowl.

I was fortunate enough to witness two of the greatest guitar players in Music City shred solos alongside one of the most popular rock bands of this generation— all for a good cause!

Mt. Joy was originally scheduled to perform at the main stage on Saturday night at Bonnaroo. However, the Tennessee-based music festival was called off for safety reasons after just one full day when nasty weather rolled through the area and ruined a large amount of unprepared campsites. Some festivalgoers were stuck in the mud with no way to get out come sunrise on Saturday morning. It was a mess.

Fortunately, the entire weekend was not lost! Multiple scheduled acts scrambled together various pop-up shows in Nashville so Roovians descended upon the city with whatever clothes they had packed and their 3/4 refunds burning a hole in their pocket. Kind of hilarious to see… if we’re able to laugh about it?

Remi Wolf moved her Insanely Fire 1970s Pool Party SuperJam to the Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night but resale tickets cost as much as $800 so I could only live vicariously through all of the incredible videos on social media. The FOMO was (and still is) very real. Hayley Miss Williams, if ya nasty, sang alongside artists like Grouplove, Medium Build, Gigi Perez and Mt. Joy.

Mt. Joy also stuck around for an extra day to perform a pop-up solo set at the Bowl on Monday in support of ACLU Tennessee. You can watch the first ~15 minutes here:

Mt. Joy typically performs two different sets but they decided instead to “play until it felt right to stop” because the venue was at capacity with everybody jammed in like sardines. They also brought out two very special guests and the guests just so happened to both be female guitar players!

As Matt Quinn said, Nashville has “two or tree” good musicians. Tal Wilkenfeld is one of them.

The legendary female bassist came out for ‘Pink Lady’ to play a rocking solo alongside Jackie Miclau on the keys. It was my favorite part of the evening.

Not long thereafter, Mt. Joy invited Grace Bowers to play on ‘Astrovan.’ Marcus King recently ripped a solo on the same song while in Los Angeles that melted my face. The 19-year-old guitar prodigy kept pace with one of the best to ever do it!

Bowers is very quickly becoming a mainstay in Nashville if she isn’t already there. The All-American Rejects invited her out for their pop-up show on the east side at the end of last month. Now Mt. Joy.

The more Grace Bowers, the better, if you ask me!

Of course, Mt. Joy closed out the night with their version of Teenage Dirtbag during the encore. They did not answer the question of “Who is Noelle?” but they sounded great. It is one of my favorite covers.

Quinn made it abundantly clear that Mt. Joy was not trying to “make good” for Bonnaroo. However, they were extremely grateful for everybody who showed out on a Monday night to dance and sing and be merry on the tail end of a weekend that did not go according to plan. It was an awesome event.
