A TikToker’s travel ‘hack’ for getting extra baggage on a flight for free has been blasted as “dangerous” by experts after it resurfaced online.
Travel hacks have long been a popular genre of content online. Everyone wants the most efficient way to pack their luggage, find cheap airline tickets, and get through security without wasting too much time.
Some of these ‘hacks’ have, at times, been helpful. Yet there are others that have either been downplayed or outright blasted by experts.
Back in 2023, TikToker Jay Steinberg went viral with his ‘hack’ to get more baggage on a flight without paying extra fees. He suggested arriving to the airport “early” and leaving a second bag in plain sight. Then, you get your other bag weighed by staff and checked onto the plan, leaving you to return for the other bag and take it on board.
TikToker’s ‘unethical’ travel hack downplayed
Steinberg, who goes by Travel With Jay Berg on TikTok, was successful in his original video. Despite it being over two years old, it has had new life breathed into it recently as experts have blasted it.
“We all know the frustration of lifting your bag onto the luggage scales, only to find out it’s over the limit and you’ll have to pay extra. But this hack is not just dishonest, it’s dangerous,” travel expert Adam Ewart from Send My Bag told Indy 100.
“You should never leave your baggage unattended in an airport, full stop. Not only could it be stolen, but unattended bags can trigger major security concerns and even evacuations. The consequences far outweigh the cost of a few kilos over the limit.”
Viewers were also quick to shout down the ‘unethical’ hack as well. “I’ve never had carry on luggage weighed and you’re allowed a carry on and a personal item (backpack) that can fit under seat,” one said.
“In Dubai, someone near the gate is checking again,” another added.
