Miley Cyrus fans were confused and frustrated when the premiere of the star’s visual album at the Tribeca Film Festival was not a concert. Members of the crowd pressured her to perform, shouting, “we paid $800!”
Miley Cyrus’ visual album, Something Beautiful, a 55-minute film to coincide with her musical project of the same name, premiered over the weekend at the Tribeca Film Festival. But fans of the former “Hannah Montana” star were disgruntled when they realized the event, which they “paid $800” to see, was not a concert.
On Friday, Miley Cyrus was joined by the visual album’s co-directors, Brendan Walter and Jacob Bixenman, as well as producer Panos Cosmatos. The group was there to discuss and premiere Something Beautiful at the New York festival. But partway through the discussion, several fans began to heckle the star and insisting that she sing.
“We thought this was a concert!” one attendee can be heard yelling and interrupting the Q&A in a video shared on social media. “We paid $800!”
“Are you actually going to sing?!” yelled another, which prompted a roar from the crowd, who were apparently wondering the same thing. The ordeal left Cyrus visibly flustered.
The event continued, but another fan interrupted to demand Cyrus sing “The Climb.” Finally, Cyrus gave in, telling the crowd, “You have to start it,” before she began to sing the requested song a cappella. The performance turned into a singalong as the audience joined in on the 2009 hit.
Afterward, fans came to Cyrus’ defense on social media, criticizing fans for the mixup. “They thought they were going to the Tribeca Film Festival for a concert?!” one questioned. Those ‘fans’ are soooo rude and entitled,” said another. “They should be ashamed.”
But several attendees also took to social media to defend themselves, with some claiming they purchased tickets for the premiere on resale platforms that advertised the event as a concert. One fan included a screenshot of a search query with a sponsored VividSeats link that read, “Miley Cyrus & 2025 Endless Summer Vacation Tour.”
Cyrus explained during the Q&A that the Something Beautiful project was a “deeply personal” one, and that she was “very protective of not having very many references.”
“I wanted to be the reference,” said Cyrus. “You can’t do something that no one’s ever done before with a bunch of other women on your wall.”
Something Beautiful hits theaters on June 12. The 55-minute “visual album” coincides with her forthcoming album of the same name.
