Anyone who signs up to climb an active volcano does so knowing they’re taking a bit of a risk. That includes some people who recently visited Mount Etna in Italy only to see their excursion cut short after it erupted while they were on its slopes.
Millions of people make the trek to Sicily each year, and a very good chunk of the tourists who visit the island off the coast of Italy will go out of their way to get up close and personal with Mount Etna, the volcano that comprises a solid chunk of its eastern coast.
Mount Etna is one of the tallest volcanoes that Europe has to offer and one of the most active ones on the planet, but its propensity for eruptions doesn’t dissuade close to 1.5 million people from visiting the site (which covers more than 450 square miles) on a yearly basis.
There have been a few relatively isolated instances where people lost their lives due to a particularly violent eruption (there have been a total of 77 confirmed fatalities over the centuries), but experts have been able to chart its internal fissure activity to the point where you don’t really have to worry about literally ending up in the line of fire if you decide to visit one of Sicily’s most popular tourist attractions.
That reality is documented in the footage that was captured by a number of different people who headed to Mount Etna on Monday only to experience its most recent eruption up close and personal, as Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology says “explosive activity from the Southeast Crater” resulted in a fountain of lava cascading down its slope.
Officials say the eruption didn’t pose any risk to tourists on the volcano at the time nor the communities in its vicinity, but we were treated to some clips of people staging a very hasty exit after realizing it was time to leave.
