Chatting with Tosca Musk: CEO and co-founder of Passionflix

Tosca Musk is the CEO and co-founder of Passionflix. She chatted about directing and co-writing the new series “The Black Dagger Brotherhood,” which will premiere on June 5th on her streaming service Passionflix.

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” This quote applies to Tosca Musk.

The new show is based on the famed paranormal romance book series, which were written by New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward. 

In her personal life, Tosca is the younger sister of businessman, CEO, and entrepreneur Elon Musk.

‘The Black Dagger Brotherhood’ series

On filming “The Black Dagger Brotherhood” series, Musk remarked, “It has been absolutely amazing. It has been an absolute joy working with J.R. Ward. Our cast is phenomenal. I am really proud of what we created.”

Musk on bringing J.R. Ward’s books to life

Musk revealed that she is a big fan of the J.R. Ward’s books.

On bringing J.R. Ward’s books to life, Musk stated, “It was very exciting and quite terrifying at the same time. There is an incredible fan-base for the books, so I wanted to be true to them and that everything that was in J.R.’s books was able to be brought to the screen as much as possible.”

“Some things were a little impossible to bring to the screen, but I tried so that the fans will be happy,” Musk said.

Lesson learned from this series

On the lessons learned from this series, Musk said with a sweet laugh, “That I can work 24 hours a day through the night in the freezing cold weather and still make it home to take my kids to school in the morning.”

The digital age

On being a filmmaker in the digital age, Musk said, “I think it’s great. It means that I can take my content and deliver it directly to the consumer as opposed to having to see if we can get it on network television, so I think that’s really fabulous.”

Working with ‘The Black Dagger Brotherhood’ cast

On working with “The Black Dagger Brotherhood” cast of actors, she said, “The cast was amazing.”

“J.R. Ward and I chose the cast together. We were thrilled with the chemistry this cast has and how much time they’ve spent together in their off time now after we finished the show. Their chemistry is getting stronger and stronger,” Musk admitted.

“We have to be together for the next 15 years while we make more and more seasons of ‘The Black Dagger Brotherhood.’ I love that they are all supportive and they hang out and they have a true friendship,” she added.

Working with Michael Roark as Butch

Musk praised Michael Roark for his performance in this series as Butch.

“We love Michael as Butch,” Musk said. “Michael wanted the role but I told him he had to audition for it even though I know that he could act and I love working with him, but I wanted to show it to J.R. Ward. Everyone had to audition, and Michael did a wonderful taping, and his Boston accent was so good.”

Working with Johann Urb in her first movie ever for her streaming service

Musk spoke about working with actor Johann Urb, who starred as the male lead in Hollywood Dirt,” which was the debut feature film on the Passionflix network. It was directed by Tosca Musk from a screenplay by Joany Kane. Urb starred opposite Emma Rigby as his female lead.

“Johann Urb is fantastic. I love him so much,” Musk exclaimed. “Johann is truly fabulous, and I am so grateful that he did our first movie. It was great.”

Growth of her streaming service

Musk opened up about the growth of her streaming service.

“I couldn’t do this without the support of the authors that I work with,” Musk admitted. “So, I’m really, really grateful. Bestselling authors. Lucky me and lucky Passionflix.”

“I am super excited and the show is premiering on June 5th on Passionflix,” Musk admitted. “We are really excited for people to subscribe, and then, they can stream it anywhere. So, I’m very excited for people to watch this show.”

“We hope people subscribe on June 5th to watch the first episode. We’ll be making seasons hopefully every year for the rest of my life,” she said.

“I am so excited to bring these books by J.R. Ward to life,” she added.

Stage of her life

On the title of the current chapter of her life, Musk revealed, “Passionflix does New York, and I am having a great time.”

Superpower of choice

Her superpower of choice would be “cloning” since that would allow her to be in multiple places at once. “Cloning would allow me to do multiple things,” she admitted.

Success

Regarding her definition of the word success, Musk stated, “For me, success means that what I create as a filmmaker is enjoyed by the viewers. Also, if people get excited about the show as I am excited about making it, that makes me very happy.”

“As an artist, it’s really incredible if people watch your work, and if they truly love it, then that’s truly amazing,” she added.
