A TikToker has gone viral after revealing the characters from her grandmother’s 21-year-old Final Fantasy XI game will “never be played again” following her death.

On May 25, TikToker amabigaill uploaded a video showcasing the characters from her grandma’s Final Fantasy XI game, which she started playing back in 2004. The TikToker revealed that her grandmother had died in mid-May and that the characters would never be played again.

“She started playing this game in 2004. Made friends playing online with a few of these teen gamer guys, they had played together for many years, and even traveled here to take her to dinner one time in 2010,” amabigaill wrote in the video’s caption.

“She kept in close touch with one of them, he’s super grown with a child now, he sent her photos of his family all the time, and she would tell him how she’s doing. I had to break the news to him. She named 4 of her characters after her 4 oldest granddaughters.”

The video quickly went viral on TikTok, receiving more than 3.1 million views at the time of writing. Thousands of viewers were also quick to send their tributes, with some claiming that they’d fought alongside the TikToker’s grandma.

“I created a TikTok account just to respond to this. I am the “very grown” player mentioned in the description. The player known as Jessimay had a profound effect a the Asura server and my life for decades. She was one of my very best friends from the time I was a young adult until her death,” one said.

“She was, without question, one of the kindest people I’ve met not only in FFXI, but ever. I’m so sorry for your loss,” another added.

The TikToker’s heartbreaking story.

“Get onto each of them. Find out if she was in a Free Company. Contact their guild master and let them know. If she made friends, they should know,” another suggested.

Amabigaill provided an update on May 27, noting how “powerful” the TikTok had been and that some of her grandma’s friends had been in touch with in–game messages.

Others recanted their own experiences, saying they’d done similar to the TikToker. “The “last online” metric can be devastating in the MMO world,” another chimed in.
