The new live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch might leave audiences with one major question… how did Lilo and Nani’s parents die?
While the 2002 animated version answered the question, the 2025 live-action version doesn’t seem to address it. (If we missed the moment, let us know in the comments!)
In Lilo & Stitch, Lilo is a six-year-old girl being cared for by her older sister following the sudden death of their parents. The movie doesn’t reveal how long ago the parents died or what actually happened.
Well, we have some details to give you.

In the animated film, we learned that Lilo and Nani’s parents tragically died in a car accident on a rainy night.
At the beginning of the movie, you might remember that Lilo is late to her hula dance recital as she goes to feed a fish named Pudge, who she says controls the weather. It’s believed that Lilo makes sure to take care of Pudge so that the fish can prevent further storms from happening, to ensure that no one else passes in a similar way as her parents.
There’s a deleted scene from the animated movie that shows Lilo burying Pudge next to her parents’ graves. While we can’t see the full gravestones, the year of death begins with “200.” We don’t see the full year, but know that the deaths happened in the 2000s. If we assume the animated film takes place in 2002, the year the film was released, then Mr. and Mrs. Pelekai died within a year or two of the start of the story.
