Merpire chases the highs of a crush on ‘Leaving With You’

Melbourne-based artist Merpire has released ‘Leaving With You,’ a jittery, emotionally charged track that dives headfirst into the euphoric disarray of mutual infatuation.
The single is the latest taste from Milk Pool, Merpire’s forthcoming album due out July 4, and follows earlier offerings ‘Bigger‘ and ‘Premonition.’ Co-produced by Merpire and long-time collaborator James Seymour, ‘Leaving With You’ blends raw, erratic indie textures with dark pop polish. The track builds around internal monologue-style verses, a dreamy pre-chorus, and a swelling climax of desperate vocals, searing guitars, and head-thrashing drums. Jess Ellwood (Julia Jacklin, Alex Lahey) contributes to the track’s powerful instrumentation.
The accompanying video, directed by Brooke Painter, channels late ’90s/early ’00s energy and captures the electric buzz of a maybe-mutual crush—nights spent waiting for a text, second-guessing every glance, and riding the thrill of proximity. A cameo from friend and artist Ruby Gill adds to its charm.
Speaking on the single, Merpire shares:
“‘Leaving With You’ is about those feelings you get around a crush when you have an inkling they feel the same way: the wonder if they’ll turn up to the party you’re at is both unnerving and exhilarating, you’re not sure if you’re hiding it well, nothing fills you with more energy than your crush being in your vicinity. You think about going home, you’re tired, but then they turn up and suddenly you could stay all night, living in this space where the probability between hooking up with them and not hooking up with them is equal.”
‘Leaving With You’ continues to build anticipation for Milk Pool, a record Merpire describes as one for the romantics and daydreamers—those navigating transformation and desire. With national tours and high-profile festival slots rounding out her year, Merpire’s momentum is only growing.
