Steve Perry Talks Willie Nelson Collab and Journey Legacy

Former Journey singer Steve Perry recently recorded and released an updated version of the band’s classic 1983 ballad “Faithfully” as a duet with Willie Nelson, bringing together two legendary voices. The proceeds from the single are set to benefit Farm Aid in conjunction with the charitable organization’s 40th anniversary.

Consequence caught up with Perry just prior to the release of the song to chat about his collaboration with Nelson, as well as the importance of the proceeds going to Farm Aid, and whether he has more new music on the way.

With Perry long considered one of rock’s greatest vocalists, we were also curious to know which singers today have resonated with him. Additionally, we wanted to get his thoughts on school janitor Richard Goodall winning America’s Got Talent last fall after singing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Faithfully” during his run to the championship.

Along with the new release of “Faithfully,” the lineup for the 2025 Farm Aid concert was announced. The show will take place September 20th in Minneapolis and feature Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and more. Like Perry and Nelson’s song collaboration, proceeds from the concert will raise funds for farm families.

How did the idea come up to collaborate with Willie Nelson on a new recording of the Journey classic “Faithfully”?

That’s a really great question. I would say back in the early ’80s when Journey was touring, we used to go to Texas all the time, and a couple of the shows or a couple of the tours, he came backstage and we got to meet him. And I never forgot what it was like hearing his voice on the radio growing up and meeting him.
