Millennials might remember Lele Pons, an American-Venezuelan influencer who first gained fame for her humorous skits on Vine before transitioning to long-form content on YouTube.
In the years since then, Pons has become a full-fledged music artist, as well as wife to Puerto Rican rapper Guaynaa and a soon-to-be mother of a baby girl.
Pons, like many other expecting parents, decided to share her joy with friends and family with a gender reveal party — but her over-the-top celebration quickly came under fire.

On April 25, Miami-based party planner ‘Gener Reveal Miami’ posted a video from Pons’ gender reveal, which was clearly inspired by Nickelodeon’s classic ‘Slime’ from the 90’s.
Pons and her hubby stood in front of a ‘detonator’ labeled ‘TNT,’ which Pons pushed down at the end of a countdown. On either side of the detonator were members of her family and friends on opposing ‘teams’ — ‘Team Boy’ and ‘Team Girl,’ all wearing clear protective suits.
Once the countdown ended, a wave of pink slime came cascading down on the ‘Team Girl’ side of the stage, sending Pons sliding and falling to the floor in her high heels.
While Pons ended up being unharmed and the event went on without a hitch, commenters sounded off with concerns for the influencers’ health, noting that the big reveal could have taken a tragic turn.
“As event professionals, we have to do better with risk assessment and ensure our clients are better cared for,” fellow event planner ‘Andrew Roby Events’ admonished. “Sometimes saying NO is ok for their safety. This could have been tragic, and thank God it wasn’t.”
“Literally the most dangerous reveal I have seen!” another commenter wrote. “Why didn’t the organizers tell her to stand in front of the step where the slime wouldn’t reach until she could safely step in? This could have ended so bad, shame on you guys for not prioritizing the safety of the mom and the baby.”
“Did she nearly lose her child over a gender reveal?” another asked.
Pons has not addressed the incident publicly on her social media profiles and continues to post happy photos chronicling her pregnancy journey in preparation for her daughter’s birth.

Gender reveal parties have become increasingly controversial affairs over the years after several viral reveals ended in disaster.
For instance, one couple’s gender reveal party ended up choking their guests when they used colored dry ice to announce that they were having a baby girl, sending friends and family fleeing from their home.
In 2023, a pilot died after flying low to release colored smoke for a couple’s gender reveal, losing control of the aircraft and crashing into the ground.
