The Cannes Film Festival kicked off its 78th edition with the Opening Ceremony and the world premiere of Amélie Bonnin’s debut feature, Partir Un Jour (Leave One Day), led by Juliette Armanet, Bastien Bouillon, and François Rollin.

The premiere was attended by the cast of the film, including Quentin Tarantino, Rossy De Palma, Julia Garner, Nava Mau, Zahra Amir Ebrahimi, and Palme d’Or Honoree Robert De Niro. 

Leave One Day follows Cécile, a budding restaurateur whose ambition to open a gourmet haven in Paris takes an unexpected detour. A family crisis compels her return to her rural roots, where, amidst the echoes of her youth, she reconnects with a long-lost love.

The festival formally kicked off on Monday with the poster installation, then moved to the Hotel Martinez, where jury president Juliette Binoche and her fellow jurors dined on the eve of opening night. Joining Binoche on this year’s jury are Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Leïla Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sangsoo, Carlos Reygadas, and Jeremy Strong.

Over the coming days, the jury will deliberate on the 21 films in competition, deciding the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor. The winners will be revealed at the closing ceremony on May 24, immediately followed by the screening of Momoko Sato’s Dandelion’s Odyssey. 

On Wednesday, May 14, actor and producer Tom Cruise, director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, and the cast will walk the steps of the Palais des Festivals for the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The film will be presented Out of Competition at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

Buzzy premieres taking place at the festival are Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, led by a star-studded cast including Tom Hanks, Benecio del Toro and Mia Threapleton; Eddington, by Ari Aster starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone; New Wave by Richard Linklater; Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut, Eleanor The Great, starring June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Die My Love with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson; Sentimental Value from Joachim Trier, starring Renate Reinsve; Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, with Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright and A$SAP Rocky; Alpha from Julia Ducournau; Carla Simone with Romeria,  and Tarik Saleh with The Eagles of the Republic.

Joining the cohort of first-time directors at Cannes, Kristen Stewart and Harris Dickinson will each premiere their feature directorial debuts. Stewart’s The Chronology of Water stars Imogen Poots, and Dickinson’s Urchin features Frank Dillane as a London drifter navigating societal displacement.
