According to a report from the Committee on Parks and Recreation of New York City, the Beasty Boys will be honored by their home city with a corner christened Beastie Boys Square in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
The New York rap legends and pioneers’ fans have rallied for the renaming of the corner since 2014 and have managed and maintained a campaign to that end despite the change being rejected due to past community board citing that the location didn’t meet the required guidelines which include demonstrated and consistent voluntary commitment to the area.
The location in question is the corner of Rivington and Ludlow featured on the cover of their sophomore LP, Paul’s Boutique, which was released in 1989. The physical copy of the album folded out to show a full panorama of the intersection as viewed from 99 Rivington St.
Former Bad Boy Records representative and Brooklyn resident LeRoy McCarthy celebrated the board’s vote by telling the New York Post, “hip-hop don’t stop.” He continued to share, “It has been a long road to get Beastie Boys Square accomplished, but I am happy to see New York government formally embracing the indigenous arts and culture of hip hop, and the street sign is very appropriate because hip hop is from the NYC streets.”
The news of Beastie Boys Square comes hot on the heels of the announcement of the 30th-anniversary boxset and deluxe reissuing of their platinum album Check Your Head.
