Matty Matheson’s hardcore supergroup Pig Pen have announced their debut album, Mental Madness, out June 27th, and released their first single “Mental Mentality.”
The group is comprised of Matheson (a chef, restauranteur, and actor known for his role as Neil Fak in FX’s Emmy-winning TV series The Bear) on vocals, alongside guitarist Wade MacNeil (Alexisonfire) and three members of Daniel Romano’s Outfit: guitarist Daniel Romano, drummer Ian Romano, and bassist Tommy Major.
On “Mental Mentality,” the band introduces its brand of frenetic hardcore. Opening with a sludgy noise-rock riff that evokes the Jesus Lizard, Pig Pen pick up the pace around the 45-second mark, unleashing blistering speeds as Matheson shouts into the mic: “I have the mental madness. I’m sick. I’m sick. I’m sick.” The album announcement and single arrive after the band’s live debut last month.
Pig Pen apparently wrote each song on Mental Madness in a single day after months of sharing riff ideas. The 10 songs were self-record and produced a day later before being mixed by Arthur Rizk (Fucked Up, Power Trip) and mastered by Alan Douches. Matheson describing the LP’s lyrical content as “mental health shit.”

“You can be having a beautiful day, surrounded by friends,” Matheson said in a press release, “and your brain can continuously ruin it. No matter how good or bad your life is, you can still hate yourself. I’ve got to ask myself why am I feeling the ways I’m feeling?”
