RUSH's Alex Lifeson Jammed with Metallica's Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo

In a new interview, RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson revealed that he recently had dinner with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo — an evening that culminated with an impromptu jam session.

Speaking with prog-rock site Sea of Tranquility, Lifeson said he went out for dinner with the Metallica members in Toronto for the “M72 World Tour” last week, and the veteran musicians ended up jamming for a few hours afterward at Lifeson’s house.

“They came over after dinner and we played for a few hours, and it was great,” Lifeson said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), explaining that the trio locked into a simple blues vamp before getting more adventurous, much to the RUSH guitarist’s delight.

“Often in the past, if you jam with a bunch of people, we’d play a 12-bar bluesy thing; everybody can play that: ‘Let’s do that,’” Lifeson said. “But when you play with great musicians like those guys are, places you go is, it’s just unbelievable. It’s so remarkable. And God, I loved every second that we did that. The three of us just were oozing with enthusiasm, that whole thing. And that’s pretty cool.”

The dinner party and jam sesh likely took place while Metallica were in town for their gigs at the Rogers Centre in Toronto late last month. During the second show on April 26th, Hammett and Trujillo paid tribute to RUSH by performing a rendition of “La Villa Strangiato” for the duo’s instrumental cover break, a recurring bit during Metallica sets.

Both Lifeson and Hammett made Consequence’s recent list of the 100 Best Guitarists of All Time.

Meanwhile, Metallica’s “M72 Tour” rolls on with a show Wednesday night (May 7th) at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia, prior to two performances at Welcome to Rockville this weekend. Get tickets here.
