Mei Semones Breaks Down New Album Animaru Track By Track

Our recurring feature series Track by Track sees artists guiding readers through each song on their new release. Today, Mei Semones breaks down her debut album, Animaru.

Over the past several years, Mei Semones has established herself as an emerging artist to watch with a string of captivating singles and EPs. Now, the Brooklyn-based guitar virtuoso has capitalized on the anticipation by unveiling her debut album, Animaru.

Released just over a year after her critically acclaimed Kabutomushi EP, the full-length’s title comes from the Japanese pronunciation of “animal.” A collection of musical curveballs, the album features Semones craftily weaving her diverse set of ideas into a cohesive sound.

What makes the 24-year-old artist’s latest release particularly unique is its approach to love songs. Rather than being motivated by romance, Semones dedicates tracks to New York City, her guitar, and music itself, reflecting on the meaning they have given to her life.

In that spirit, Animaru is held together by a positive and uplifting perspective. This involves writing songs about “moving on from friendships, being there for the people that were there for you, and making the people that are important to you proud,” as well as “prioritizing what’s important to you and following your instincts.”

“I hope it empowers other people to do what they want,” the singer-songwriter tells Consequence about her latest offering, adding that “we should live for ourselves and ourselves only.”
