Folk-infused rockers, Dispatch, have shared the latest single off their impending ninth studio LP, Yellow Jacket, due on June 6 via Bomber Records/AWAL Recordings. Their new single, “Whisk Me Away,” draws on a melodic association with the Southern rock troubadours while exploring themes of human fragility, vindication, and the urgency of the present moment.
“Whisk Me Away” serves as the third sonic preview to derive from the 11-track collection, and follows already unleashed material from the set: the John Butler featured, “Trinket,” and the album’s title track. For the making of the album, the core members returned to their Boston stomping grounds to record and produce nearly all of its contents.
For this project, Dispatch worked with Craig Welsch at Rear Window Studios, where they found collective musical solace through the instrumental fusion of reggae, ska, and roots rock elements that have provided a foundational following in support of nine record cycles.
“For us, this album is a way to acknowledge what our culture is facing and the effects of the abuse of power,” said Chadwick Stokes, via press release.
He continued, “In this album, you’ll find the effects war has on family in ‘Johnny Whoops,’ the complexity and brilliance of Emily Dickinson’s words in ‘Trinket (ft. John Butler),’ and we pay homage to the great activists of our time alongside Ani DiFranco on ‘In the Street,’ as a reminder of how crucial it is to not sit back idly. But mostly, our goal with this album is for listeners to enjoy the tunes in whatever way, hopefully at times collectively, and in community.”
Days before Dispatch releases Yellow Jacket, they will kick off their extensive summer tour with an array of special guests scheduled to take part in select dates, including LP guest John Butler and his band, G. Love and Special Sauce, Donavon Frankenreiter, and more. The tour will begin on June 3 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Fla.
