During his career Guy Ritchie has directed a fight scene or two….hundred. The man knows his way around a brawl! Now he’s ready to helm another film sure to deliver a whole lot of fisticuffs. He’s taking over directing duties from Doug Liman for Amazon MGM Studios’ Road House 2. But while things are changing behind the camera, the sequel will still feature the return of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Elwood Dalton.
Variety reports Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, The Gentleman) has officially signed on to direct the followup to one of Prime Video’s biggest hits ever. He’s returning to Amazon MGM for his third film with the studio. He previously wrote and directed The Covenant. He also pulled double-duty his upcoming film In the Grey which still does not have an official release date.
Ritchie isn’t the only one with plenty of action movie experience joining the sequel. Will Beall (Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F) will pen the script. While no details about the story are known, the 2024 remake/reboot/reimagining ended with former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton leaving the bar in the Florida Keys for an unknown destination. He could end up anywhere… so long as that place has a bar that needs cleaning up.
While it’s unclear why Dalton’s next job will take him, it’s no surprise Liman won’t be back to continue telling the bouncer’s story. The director didn’t hide his unhappiness with Amazon’s decision to make the film a streaming only release. He was ultimately proven right about that strategy, as Road House became the streamer’s biggest hit ever. That’s why Amazon didn’t waste any time announcing a sequel.
The movie is also really good and a whole lot of fun! Like the original, Road House is the exact type of film that would have been an even better experience if you saw it in a packed theater. Will Amazon give viewers the chance to do that with Road House 2? We don’t know that either. We just know with Guy Ritchie’s experiences filming fights the film deserves a fighting chance to appear on big screens.
