FX’s Shōgun recently took the TV world by storm. So much so that instead of a planned mini-series, Shōgun became a full-fledged TV series with a confirmed season two and three. We knew from the start that Hiroyuki Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga would return for season two of the series, but now FX has confirmed that Cosmo Jarvis’ English pilot John Blackthorne would also be back for more. Additionally, FX has revealed more about the plot of Shōgun season two.
The network shares that Shōgun season two will be “a wholly original new chapter to the first season.” The first season, of course, was adapted from James Clavell’s novel Shōgun. It’s an interesting veer from the initial purpose of the series. Season two, FX, further reveals we will see a time jump in Shōgun season two. The events of the second chapter will happen 10 years after the first season. The network notes that Shōgun season two “continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.” We feel interested to see the direction the series will take without a guidebook to follow.
In full FX shares, “Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who created the series for television, recently wrapped a writers’ room devoted to creating a wholly original new chapter to the first season, which was an original adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel… Part two of Shōgun is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.”

Of note, Sanada’s Lord Tornaga and Jarvis’ John Blackthorne are the only two members of the original season one cast who survived Shōgun season one. Other main characters such as Anna Sawai’s Lady Toda Mariko and Tadanobu Asano’s Kashigi Yabushige met their deaths in the first chapter of the show.
Shōgun season one is now streaming in full on Hulu. The synopsis of the series reads, “In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.” Season two of Shōgun will begin production in January. It will film in Vancouver.
