Apple Original Films today unveiled the trailer for Bono: Stories of Surrender, the intimate documentary starring the U2 frontman, ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film, described as “a bold and lyrical visual exploration” of Bono’s one-man show Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief…, finds the rock icon in an introspective, confessional mode.
“This is my story,” he says in the trailer. “I’m stuck with it.”
Elsewhere, he recounts the loss of his mother when he was just 14. “Last time I saw my mother alive,” he shares, “was at her own father’s funeral. It sounds almost too Irish, I know. My father’s response to this tragedy was to never speak of her again.”
Bono also talks about those closest to him on his journey from young Dubliner to the height of fame. “Turns out, the most extraordinary thing about my life is the people I’m in relationships with,” he observes. “I met my wife, Ali, the same week I joined U2.”
Bono: Stories of Surrender, from RadicalMedia and Plan B Entertainment, debuts globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 30. The same day, Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive) premieres on Apple Vision Pro, the tech company’s mixed-reality platform, “a remarkable media format recorded in 8K with Spatial Audio to produce a 180-degree video that places viewers onstage with Bono and in the center of his story.”

The documentary directed by Andrew Dominik (Blonde, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), is shot in striking black and white. The one-man show at the heart of the film grew out of Bono’s celebrated memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, and the accompanying book/theatre tour.
In the film, Bono “pulls back the curtain on a remarkable life and the family, friends, and faith that have challenged and sustained him, revealing personal stories about his journey as a son, father, husband, activist and rockstar,” notes a release. “Along with never-before-seen, exclusive footage from the Beacon Theatre shows, the film features Bono performing many of the iconic U2 songs that have shaped his life and legacy.”
