The premise is simple. One gorilla enters. 100 men enter. Either the gorilla or some quantity the men walk out after a fight to the death. Who survives? That is the question that has swept the internet in recent days after X user @DreamChasnMike presented the hypothetical scenario. The only problem is that nobody seems to be able to agree upon an answer.
So we at BroBible decided to take up the 100 men vs. 1 gorilla debate ourselves, and the results were unsurprisingly mixed. But one thing is certain: there will be chaos and lots of bloodshed.
Connor Toole, BroBible Deputy Editor: If we’re assuming the 100 guys are being sentenced to death and the only way they can escape that fate is killing the gorilla then they’re going to beat it eventually.
Cass Anderson, BroBible Editor-In-Chief: A gorilla’s bite force is estimated to be around 1,300 PSI (pounds per square inch). This is significantly stronger than the average human bite force of about 162 PSI. A force of 500 to 1000 PSI can break some human bones.
Doug Charles, BroBible Senior Editor: 100 guys would definitely beat a gorilla. Sure several would die along the way, but the guys following behind them would do the damage.
Eric Italiano, BroBible Senior Editor and Social Media Coordinator: There’s an entire 60-year franchise of movies made about how much physically superior apes are.
Doug Charles: The gorilla would prolly take out like 30 before the guys got him.
Doug then took to the internet, which legally cannot lie, to discover that ChatGPT claims that “In almost every realistic scenario: no, 100 unarmed men would not be able to safely or effectively take down a healthy adult gorilla — at least not without suffering massive casualties.”
BUT
“If the 100 men had some way to pin it down all at once — and accepted that dozens might be injured or killed — they might eventually overpower it by sheer mass. But in a straight brawl with no tools or weapons? The gorilla would tear through them.”
Cass Anderson: You would never get 100 people to cooperate like that, ever.
Eric Italiano: How are the men even supposed to inflict damage on the gorilla? upper cuts?
Connor Toole: Let it get tired and suffocate it. A gorilla weighs like two people. Gotta just dogpile it.
At this point, the discussion got became important enough BroBible CEO and general partner Jason Cammerota felt the need to pop in with his thoughts.
Jason Cammerota: 100 guys beat the gorilla. 100 people is a lot. Sure, what happens if the gorilla kills one guy, who knows, but you have to assume it isn’t a “maybe I participate, maybe I don’t situation.” Participation is not optional.
Ultimately, the BroBible staff did not come to a unanimous conclusion. But the general sentiment seems to be that 100 men are just far too many for the gorilla to combat. That’s despite the internet, which, again, cannot lie, claiming otherwise.
This fits in line with results on X and polling that shows that men, particularly American men, are extremely confident about killing animals that could eviscerate them in short order. But hey, if you don’t go in with some sort of self-belief, you have no chance.
