Twitch star Pokimane revealed that, although she considered quitting streaming due to harassment, she felt like she had to keep going to “pay back” her parents for raising her.
Imane ‘Pokimane‘ Anys is the most-followed woman on Twitch and one of the net’s most popular gaming-focused influencers, boasting millions of followers across multiple social platforms.
Online fame isn’t all it’s chalked up to be, though. Anys has endured an onslaught of harassment over the course of her decade-long career as an entertainer, for things as trivial as going makeup-free in a live stream or as controversial as charging a steep price for her very own snack brand.
Lately, Anys has once again found herself at the center of controversy, specifically after making comments about wealthy people that critics felt was ‘hypocritical,’ given her financial status.
Pokimane spoke out about the recent harassment against herself and other female streamers in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Pokimane says she kept streaming through harassment to “repay” her parents
Rolling Stone caught up with Pokimane to discuss how she’s able to handle being mired in so much online negativity when she’s such a prominent internet star… and she admitted that there was one thing holding her back from throwing it all away.
“As crazy as it might sound, I felt like I had no choice but to overcome those difficult moments, especially because I had certain financial goals in terms of taking care of my parents or repaying them for their sacrifices, or wanting to achieve something,” she told the outlet.
“It felt like, yeah, this might suck, but what other choice do I have?’ There have also been moments, especially in the last two years, where I’m like, ‘This is just too much for one brain and one heart to handle. Maybe I should take a step back.’”

Despite the negativity that sometimes crops up around her, Anys has also acknowledged the overwhelming support she’s received from fans, seen in this emotional stream from France where she remarked on how nice her French viewers were to her.
Despite the constant scrutiny she gets from critical viewers, she’s also grateful for the many fans and fellow content creators who lift her up during these especially difficult times.
“There are moments where I was like, ‘This is a lot, but I can feel the support of people online and in my close circle, that makes me feel like I can overcome this,’” she told Rolling Stone.
And on April 23, she went live for a Mukbang stream, where she tearfully remarked at how surprised she was that so many people were sending nice comments her way as critics negged her for not ‘acting her age.’
“…sometimes, it brings such nice people to my defense. Like, I’m shocked. My heart is warm. I am flattered when I see people stand up for me that I never expected, especially other streamers,” she said.
