Teen struck by lightning while scrolling TikTok on her phone

A 17-year-old girl was struck by lightning after it hit her house and ran through her charger while she was scrolling on TikTok.

Professionals have warned about using your phone while charging, although recent advancements in technology have made that warning rather outdated.

Regardless of the technology, if lightning were to strike your house and go through its wiring, the odds of the electrical charge going up into your phone charger and into your hand are rather high.

Australian teen Bloom Kermode learned this the hard way after lightning struck her house in late April while she was scrolling through TikTok.

According to the NYPost, Kermode was one of two people injured when storms around Queensland unleased over 2,500 lightning strikes.

“It hit the roof and everything just exploded,” Bloom said. “Everything was white and I had this ringing in my ears.”

When the lightning struck, the teenager was using her phone to scroll TikTok while it was plugged into the wall, charging.

She added: “My arm was stuck…. tensed. And it was fully numb. Everything was numb.”

10NewsFirst interviewed Bloom and her father, and during the conversation, she mentioned that she hopes the lightning strike “gives her superpowers.”

“I want superpowers, and if I don’t get them that’s going to be sad. I’m going to go get a lottery ticket to see what happens,” she added. “I put my phone on charge, I was watching TikTok on my bed… then there was a big bang.”

According to the CDC, there are about 40 million lightning strikes each year in the United States, but the odds of it striking a person are less than one in a million.

Last year, Twitch star Alinity ran in fear as lightning struck right behind her house in Texas. Although she wasn’t hit directly and remained safe, it was still a terrifying incident.
