Welcome to SOUND ADVICE, Interview’s weekly destination for playlists curated by our friends, enemies, and lovers. In recent weeks, we’ve collected playlists from Sausha, Pressure Point, and Eli Roth. This week’s installment comes from SoCal barbie Chase Icon, the hitmaker and former Twitter troll who made her musical debut with “SRS” in 2021 and hasn’t let up since. Press play on the Iconified Mona Lisa on the cover of her brand-new album, Icon Baby, to find a glitchy platinum-pop record, sexy and silly, produced by underground faves like Chicken, umru, and Ayesha Erotica. After its release last month, we hit her up to find out the key to the perfect bang, her favorite (blonde) style icons, and what songs have been getting her hype: “This is the playlist I’ve had blasting while I wander the shops in Vegas, collecting pieces for my NYC release party this Saturday,” she told us. “I want everyone who listens to feel like their 30 inch bundles are blowing in the wind as the doors of fate swing open before them.”

———

Where do you dance? Anywhere nobody’s watching—but also everywhere that they are! Jumping on my bed listening to beats, pumping through the mall with music in my ears, or just going crazy on stage… I feel like there’s always a higher frequency I’m tapping into through movement.

Who do you trust most with the aux? Me! I’m careful with how I curate my vibe. A bad song could straight up ruin my whole day.

What’s your national anthem? “National Anthem” by Lana, of course.

What was your first concert? Azealia Banks. I showed up in Dollar Tree eyeliner and left with it fully melted down my face. She had the whole crowd in the palm of her hand, best first concert ever!

Favorite sound effect? BANG, obviously. But POP is a close second—I feel like there’s always a loud one lurking around the corner, ready to recalibrate your senses when you least expect it.

What album was your coming-of-age soundtrack? Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

Dream collab, dead or alive? I always hoped that one day I would get to work with SOPHIE.

Favorite SoCal era? Laguna Hills Mall, 2013. It’s closed now, but I miss stuffing my jacket pockets at Sephora and watching three movies at the theater, after only buying one ticket. Things were simpler then—albeit less iconic.

Who are your style icons? Pamela, Lil’ Kim, Mirage from The Incredibles, Elle Woods, and Michelle Trachtenberg (rest in peace!).

Name three things you always have on you at the function: MAC Studio Fix (the discontinued formula), Dior Lip Gloss, and the tan Hello Kitty wallet Brittney Kade gave me. It’s lucky.

Where’s the afters? My bed! The only times I’ve ever been to afters have been against my will. The best nights end when you vanish.

What makes the perfect bang? Blunt. Heavy. Long enough to block out the jealousy.

What’s the sexiest song on your album? “Bands On Me!” It’s also easily my sexiest music video—maybe the sexiest music video.

What does it really take to be an icon? An impossible (for some) balance between originality, consistency, risk, and reinvention.

What does your Notes app look like? Utter chaos. Archaeologists couldn’t decode—theres probably some million dollar ideas in there. Some secrets too but, it’s mostly shopping lists and flashes of unfinished thoughts/ideas that even I can’t decipher.

Do blondes have more fun? Only the ones who fully master the art of dissociation.

Who’s the queen of pop? She knows who she is… but her crown is slipping.

The world is ending. What are you wearing? Some vintage La Perla and pumps. It’s a signature look! Oh and with a light beat and fresh install, duhh.
