Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has come to the defense of fellow streamer Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys, following criticism she received for her comments on wealth disparity in the United States.
In a stream clip that went viral on April 21, Pokimane expressed her concerns about the growing wealth gap, stating, “The wealth disparity is getting bad!”
She added, “We hate the rich,” so when FaZe Clan member ‘Jasontheween’ pointed out that she herself is wealthy, Pokimane clarified that she was talking about billionaires and the ultra-rich.
The clip received backlash, though, as Jason predicted, with some arguing Pokimane can be considered among the ultra-rich.
“She’s worth at least 20 million wtf is she talking about, she is the rich lmfao,” one popular X post said. Another added, “She’s literally part of the 1%.”
Hasan says streamers have better understanding of wealth inequality
Hasan addressed the viral clip, defending his fellow Twitch streamer.
He emphasized that most streamers, including Pokimane, have experience with financial struggles before they were popular online, and so will have a better understanding of wealth inequality than the so-called ultra-rich.
“You want rich people to have takes like this. It’s very f**king annoying that people yell at rich people that have takes like this,” he said.
“I think it’s because of the closest that most streamers have to being normal people at a certain point in their lives, as opposed to a guy who has been a multi-billionaire for the past decade or so. Most streamers have a much nicer and much better understanding of what it used to be like when they didn’t have the f**king money, and therefore, have takes like this.”
Pokimane hasn’t spoken out since the clip sparked a debate, but has been in the news for other reasons, too. Notably, she revealed that a Twitch staff member faked a romantic relationship with her to manipulate other women.
