Moontype returns with ‘How I Used to Dance,’ the opening track from their forthcoming album I Let The Wind Push Down On Me, out May 23 on Orindal Records.

The Chicago indie rock outfit’s latest single finds singer and bassist Margaret McCarthy looking back on her early twenties with tenderness and clarity. Over a fluttering arrangement of strings, plucked piano, and even pitched wine glasses, McCarthy recalls quiet nighttime rituals and bursts of youthful catharsis: “Oh, how I used to dance / in my room, before I went to bed.” The track sets the tone for a record that documents personal change, emotional patience, and the beauty of the small, fleeting moments.

“This song is an ode to a particular time in life, living in Ohio with nowhere to put my angst. It felt really liminal living in that small town. I tried to find meaning in it then and appreciate the moments of beauty and pure emotion. The rhythm of the streetlights that turned to blinking red at night. Smashing glass with my friend. Once those were experiences I was having, now they are memories I hold.”

‘How I Used to Dance’ marks the third single shared ahead of I Let The Wind Push Down On Me, a project that sees the band stepping into a new phase, both musically and personally. With a refreshed lineup including Joe Suihkonen and Andrew Clinkman, and production from Katie Von Schleicher and Nate Mendelsohn, Moontype’s second LP signals a reinvention rooted in emotional depth.
