The White Lotus season three breakout star Aimee Lou Wood said she received an apology from Saturday Night Live after the sketch-comedy series did a low-brow impression of her. Wood was portrayed by cast member Sarah Sherman in the pre-taped sketch called “The White Potus”.
On her Instagram stories, Aimee Lou Wood — one of the big breakouts of The White Lotus season three thanks to her soulful and free-spirited performance as Chelsea — took issue with Saturday Night Live’s portrayal with her, saying she found it “mean and unfunny.”
Wood wasn’t just being a poor sport, though, as she outlined why she thought the sketch was unfunny, explaining that she was the only part of it to be “punched down upon,” which is largely thought of as being a guiding principle for comedy, i.e., the good ones punch up, not down.
You can find both Wood’s comments and the SNL sketch “The White Potus” below.
“But whilst in honest mode — I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny xo,” Wood posted on her Instagram story.
“Actually one last thing. Not Sarah Sherman’s fault, not hating on her, hating on the concept” she continued.
“Last thing I’ll say on the matter. I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth. I don’t mind caricature — I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on. Okay end of.”

On Sunday morning, Wood shared that she had received an apology from the long-running sketch comedy show, which is currently celebrating its 50th season.
From a personal point of view, I happen to agree with Wood’s take on the impression that Saturday Night Live did of her: there’s absolutely no substance or nuance to it. And similar to Wood, in the spirit of honesty, another thing: Sarah Sherman is generally like nails-on-a-chalkboard whenever she’s on screen.
Saturday Night Live has done a The White Lotus riff before, airing the sketch The Black Lotus a couple of years ago when Aubrey Plaza was the host.
