YouTuber Vikkstar is facing backlash after using AI to generate a music video for his latest song, Chemical.
As a member of the Sidemen YouTube group, Vikkstar has become one of the most popular British creators on the platform.
He’s amassed over 7.5M subscribers on his own channel, where he shares occasional vlogs and music videos.
Vikkstar uploaded a video for his new song, Chemical, on Tuesday, April 8, and almost immediately received backlash over his use of Artificial Intelligence to create it.
Vikkstar faces backlash over AI use
In the video, Vikkstar starts as himself before taking a drink from an unlabeled vial that causes electricity to start flowing out of his face.
The scene continues to change quickly until the YouTuber turns into an astronaut-like man, falling from the sky and into a big-city landscape.
Vikk confirmed the use of AI in the comments but made it clear that “weeks of human artistry” went into the video as well.
“Also for clarity, weeks of human artistry went into this project, from writing/moodboarding, to animating, building models, rendering scenes, re-rendering them & editing. AI will inevitably be part of our future & I wanted to experiment with it here,” he said.
Users quickly began sharing their thoughts in the comments, with most of them calling out Vikkstar for his use of AI.
“You can tell it’s AI because it’s possibly the most soulless music video I’ve seen. You ask someone 10 minutes after they’ve seen this what it’s about the most they could say is there’s lasers and weird faces,” one user said.
“Vikkstar using AI… we are so, so cooked,” a second replied.
A third shared: “Please don’t turn into kwebbelkop with his AI slop vids.”
Dutch YouTuber Kweebbelkop launched an AI replacement to do his videos back in August 2023, immediately sparking backlash from longtime fans of the creator. However, he’s since removed those videos from his channel and returned to showing his own face.
