Dating shows used to be much simpler and efficient. Producers didn’t always need to sequester dozens of people in a mansion for three months just so a single couple could break their phony engagement five weeks after the season finale. The goal was to find one person a date as quickly as possible by having them pick from just a handful of suitors. Like I said, it was a simpler time. But even then, it would have been super weird if one of them appeared the way Jack Black did during Saturday Night Live‘s latest date show sketch. “Indiana Jones” saw Jack Black play a contestant dressed like the iconic archeologist.
Love was in the air when Jack Black returned as host in Studio 8H. The Minecraft Movie star played a dating show contestant whose choice of attire led to a very funny sketch. In it, Andrew Dismukes’ fictional host felt compelled to break his own show’s rules. He simply had to tell the woman playing the game (Chloe Fineman) what Seattle’s Gene showed up wearing.
Jack Black’s Gene was clearly dressed exactly like Indiana Jones. And he clearly did that intentionally, despite his claims that he had no idea who Indiana Jones is. I mean, he showed up with his own whip. Maybe he could have sold his lie without the whip. But the whip… the whip sealed his deal. As did the fact that Jack Black’s character had intimate knowledge about Indiana Jones’ nickname. Classic mistake!

What really makes this short sketch work so well is the fine details around a very funny premise. Jack Black in Indiana Jones cosplay on a dating show is hilarious on its own. But James Austin Johnson and Marcello Hernández both absolutely kill it in here. The real sketch MVP, though, is Dismukes, who is so full of righteous, hilarious anger over the dumbest thing in the world.
And to think, they pulled this off with just three contestants and no roses. But also one whip.
