There are tons of videos floating around on social media where auto experts share their opinions on the worst vehicles, whether it’s that they don’t last long or break down often. But a new TikTok video from Georgia-based Royalty Auto Service’sSherwood Cooke JR. (@royaltyautoservice), uses his mechanic shop’s actual data to break down the five most expensive cars to fix, with average repair bills between $1,000 and $1,500.

5. Volkswagen

In the video, a fellow Royalty Auto Service employee asks Cooke to share the five most expensive cars to maintain.

“I went over all the data for the last two years…to see what the average repair order would be,” he says—and coming in at number five is Volkswagen, which has an average repair order of over $1,000, mostly due to oil leaks.

The German-made cars are also known to have electrical issues, according to a separate video shared by automative expert Shari Prymak. He specifically called out the Volkswagen Taos: “[This] engine has a number of reported issues including leaks, fuel, system problems, and sometimes even total engine failure.”

In the comments section of Cooke’s video, several Volkswagen owners agreed.

“Have my VW paid off and it feels like I still have a car payment at this point because of how often I have to upkeep it,” said one.

“Spot on with Volkswagens! Always cost an arm and a leg. My last Beetle had a unfixable oil leak,” wrote another.

4. BMW

In the fourth spot is another German car brand, BMW, which Cooke says also has frequent oil leaks. In fact, he notes that oil leaks are quite common on all European vehicles.

“That’s why I got rid of my BMW,” wrote a TikToker in the comments. “Had it for few years and put over $20,000 on it just to keep repairing it.”

“In the last 15 months our bmw x5 has cost us 14,000 in repairs!” shared another. “Front and back suspension, oil leak, gas line leak, seatbelt repair. Not even paid off.”

Zach Trahan (@bevurly), a service advisor at an auto shop, agrees with this assessment. In his own TikTok video, he said that “almost any” BMW model is pricy to maintain.

“I’m not saying they’re unreliable: I’m just saying I have to write these repair tickets, and the cost to do anything on these vehicles is astronomical,” Trahan cautioned. “It almost outweighs not even owning one.”

3. Ram

Next is Ram, specifically their trucks.

“These things have got motor problems, they leak oil, they have lifter issues,” Cooke explains. “There’s just a ton of issues with these vehicles.”

“I knew you would say the Ram,” agreed one commenter. “We just got one and have yet to be able to drive it due to engine issues.”

“First year of owning a Ram, blown head gasket $8,000. 2nd year.. fuel injectors, two oxygen sensors, and transmission all need to be replaced $23k!!” shared another.

In fact, a recent article from Go Banking Rates reports that the the Ram 3500 was rated the most expensive pickup truck to repair by a Car Edge analysis.

“Over ten years, estimated repair costs add up to about $26,900. This is much higher than the industry average of heavy-duty models by $8,033, CarEdge data shows,” they wrote.

2. Land Rover

“I don’t know where to begin on these things,” says Cooke, noting that he’s made many other videos about the negative aspects of owning a Land Rover.

“They have lots of engine problems,” he explains. “There’s just tons of problems with these vehicles.”

To his point, for its 2023 Annual Auto Surveys, Consumer Reports rated Land Rover as the single most expensive car brand to maintain.

“Drivers report spending an average of $4,250 on maintenance costs during their first five years of ownership. During the following five, the amount jumped to an eye-watering $15,000, for a 10-year total of $19,250,” Best Lifepreviously reported.

“My Range Rover was my dream car turned nightmare! Constantly in the shop for expensive repairs so I finally got rid of it,” shared one car owner.

Even a service advisor for the company said the price of repairs is “insane.”

1. Jaguar

And coming in as the priciest vehicle to repair is Jaguar, Land Rover’s sister company. Cooke says the average repair order for this brand is over $1,500.

“Oil leaks, engine problems, electrical problems…suspension issues,” he recounts as Jaguars’ most common problems.

In his video, Trahan also called out Jaguar and noted that these cars likely won’t even make it to 60,000 miles (which is also when the warranty period ends).

“Yeah… we’re currently enacting the lemon law on our Jaguar Suv. Beautiful car but what a nightmare,” agreed one TikToker.

“I heard a mechanic say “ if you want to drive a Jag, 1 for driving and 1 in the shop. Basically you need 2 of them because they have so much trouble,” quipped another commenter.

“Got rid of my Jaguar because of how much of a money pit they are. Bought a Subaru, so much happier,” said a third person.
