TV personality Kim Kardashian recently made headlines when she wore Marilyn Monroe‘s famous beaded dress for the 2022 Met Gala event. Kardashian had to radically change her diet to slim her body down enough to fit into the famous vintage dress.
During a recent cover interview with Allure, the famous reality TV star spoke about the experience. She revealed that the drastic change in diet triggered a flare-up of her psoriasis disorder and said, “I couldn’t really move my hands.”
Despite her best attempts, Kardashian was a tight fit for the dress, which caused some damage to the delicate fabric. The resulting damage led to criticism of the reality star and her team.
Read on to learn more about her psoriasis flare-up and the criticism about the dress.
Kim Kardashian’s Diet Change Caused A Psoriasis Flare Up
For many years, Kardashian maintained a plant-based diet but switched to a meat diet so that she could lose 16 pounds and fit into the vintage Marilyn Monroe piece. She had only three weeks to lose the weight, and the drastic change in diet affected her body negatively, triggering a psoriasis flare-up.
During the interview for her Allure cover story, the business mogul said, “Psoriasis broke out over my body and I got psoriatic arthritis so I couldn’t really move my hands. It was really painful, and I had to go to a rheumatologist who put me on a steroid. I was freaking out. I cut out the meat again, and it’s calmed down.”
The famous dress was first worn by Marilyn Monroe at a birthday fundraiser for President John F. Kennedy in 1962. It became famous because she wore it while performing the seductive “Happy Birthday” song for the President, sparking rumors that they were having an affair. The dress is now owned by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum.
She Was Diagnosed In 2011
Kardashian was first diagnosed with Psoriasis in 2010 after her mom, Kris Jenner, recognized the red rash on her daughter’s legs. Years later, Kardashian had a doctor perform an ultrasound on her hand joints, which confirmed that she had psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory disease that affects the joints.
At the time, she said, “I’m so relieved. The pain will come and go sometimes, but I can manage it, and this will not stop me. Since her first diagnosis in 2010, Kardashian has been very open about her condition on social media and during interviews. She has also helped to increase awareness about the disease.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 7.5 million people have Psoriasis in America, and about 25 to 30 percent of those people are diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Thankfully, there are different ways of managing the condition and the resulting pain.
She Faced Criticism After Wearing Marilyn Monroe’s Dress
Kardashian faced much criticism after being seen at the Met Gala in the dress. The criticism intensified when she revealed the three-week diet she did to lose weight and fit into the piece. Fans and celebrities called the diet very dangerous and criticized the reality star for “regressive messaging.”
Not long after the gala, several pictures of the dress surfaced online, showing that the SKIMS founder had allegedly stretched the fabric, which caused tears and several missing rhinestone beads. Ripley’s denied the allegation, stating that the tears were present before Kardashian wore it and that she returned it in pristine condition, exactly as it was when released.
Kim Kardashian Addressed The Criticism
During the interview with Allure, Kardashian addressed the diet criticisms and the hateful comments. She said, “If I was starving and doing it really unhealthy, I would say that, of course, that’s not a good message.”
“But I had a nutritionist, I had a trainer,” she continued, “I have never drunk more water in my life. I don’t see the criticism for other people when they lost weight for roles — they are [considered] geniuses for their craft. There are so many things out there that are so not accurate and not true. I think I’ve always just been the underdog.”
