Marathon runner sparks debate after finish line marriage proposal goes viral

A marathon runner has sparked a debate after posting a video on TikTok of her then-boyfriend proposing to her at the finish line, with some calling the act “selfish.”

In early March 2025, TikToker Sarah John uploaded a video showing the magical end to her five-hour marathon as her now-fiance got down on one knee to propose to her.

“No, I’m still not over this incredible moment,” she said in the caption as the video featured the viral ‘Hozier’s yell’ trending sound.

Shortly after it was posted, however, the video sparked debate between users in the comments as many believe her fiance “stole her moment” when finishing the marathon.

Many users called the act “selfish”

As the video went viral, hundreds of people flocked to the comments to share their thoughts about the timing of her now-fiance’s proposal.

“Am I the only one who thought he stole her moment?” one user said.

“Hmmm…should’ve let her have her moment to reflect and celebrate HER achievement, that proposal could’ve waited another day!” another commented.

A third replied: “Definitely should’ve saved this proposal for another day, totally stole her moment.”

Sarah defended her future husband, revealing that it was the “perfect proposal” for her.

“These comments are wild. If my partner did this I’d be over the moon, wouldn’t even cross my mind that he’d ‘stolen my moment.’ People need to lighten up. She clearly loved it, look how happy she is,” one user commented, prompting Sarah’s reply.

“Exactly!! These strangers seem to think they know me better than my partner,” Sarah said. “In fact anyone who knows me would know that this is the most perfect proposal for me.”

In response to another comment, the runner added: “I think he knows me better than these strangers on the internet and I couldn’t imagine anything more perfect for me.”

This is far from the first marriage proposal to go viral across TikTok, either. Back in December, Universal Studios responded after a man proposed to his fiancee in front of the Grinch.
