Deerhoof returns with ‘Immigrant Songs,’ the lead single from their upcoming album Noble and Godlike in Ruin, out April 25th via Joyful Noise Recordings. In true Deerhoof fashion, they took an unconventional route to premiere the track, dropping it exclusively via Craigslist ads—two days ahead of its official streaming release.
An epic album closer, ‘Immigrant Songs’ is an odyssey of contrasts. The track opens with Satomi Matsuzaki’s delicate vocals over a shimmering guitar and bell ostinato before erupting into a chaotic noise-rock explosion. The band—Matsuzaki, Ed Rodriguez, John Dieterich, and Greg Saunier—expertly weave together bossa nova chords, four-on-the-floor beats, and moments of open-ended tension, crafting a track that feels like reality unraveling. Beneath its seemingly innocuous party narrative lies a sharp allegory about immigration, as Matsuzaki sings, “Kindness is all I needed from you, but you think we’re in your house.” As the track escalates, it detonates into an unrelenting sonic assault, mirroring the intensifying discourse surrounding migration.
Greg Saunier says of the track:
“This song is kind of a sequel to Satomi describing her immigration tribulations in ‘Exit Only.’ It’s what it feels like to see the discourse around immigration get so twisted. The most criminal and barbaric ‘migrant horde’ to invade America was from Europe. There’s a sector of racialized, underpaid immigrants, doing labor white people won’t, who are getting deported and dehumanized in record numbers in recent years. They are really the glue keeping our society from collapsing. It’s these heroic fugitives, not millionaire politicians holding little signs with one hand while sending out fundraising emails about ‘strengthening our borders’ with the other, who actually have a thing or two to teach us all about how to resist and survive.”
‘Immigrant Songs’ is out now.
