Queen guitarist Brian May has expressed optimism at the possibility of the legendary band releasing new music.
In a new interview with Mojo, the guitarist revealed that he and drummer Roger Taylor have been independently working on material — the makings of potential Queen songs — in their respective studios.
“I think it could happen,” said May of Queen releasing new music. “Both Roger and I are constantly writing and coming up with ideas and doing things in our studios. I could have the beginnings of a Queen song right there in front of me now. It’s just whether the idea reaches maturity or not. It’s whether that seed can grow.”
May’s remarks second those made by Taylor in 2023, who seemed confident about new Queen.
“I think we might,” Taylor told Uncut about releasing new material under the name. “Brian and myself were talking the other day, and we both said that if we feel we have some good material, why not? We can still play. We can still sing. So I don’t see why not.”
In recent years, Queen have been touring with Adam Lambert as their lead singer, and the former American Idol contestant’s name has come up as a potential vocalist for new music. “We did record a song [with Lambert] which we haven’t actually finished,” Taylor told Classic Rock magazine a few years ago. “I can’t remember what it’s called. I think we were still discussing what we should call it.”
Meanwhile, Queen’s most recent album is 2008’s The Cosmos Rocks featuring singer Paul Rodgers. It’s the band’s only studio LP not to feature the late Freddie Mercury.
In addition to Queen + Adam Lambert, the band’s legacy lives on via Queen Extravaganza, an official tribute tour that’s produced by Brian May and Roger Taylor, which happens to be in the midst of an extensive UK/European tour. You can get tickets here.
