Cuco’s next big creative statement is imminent. The Mexican-American music star has announced his long-awaited new album Ridin’, a tribute to his hometown of Los Angeles, will be out May 9 on Interscope. New single “My 45,” out now, pairs Cuco with fellow Angeleno Jean Carter, who previously guested on “Bossa No Sé” from Cuco’s 2019 debut album Para Mi.

“My 45” is a woozy, head-bobbing tribute to the retro soul records that played a huge role in shaping Cuco’s musical point of view. The song’s Cliqua-directed video stars Cuco and Carter as well as Dancing With The Stars winner and Marvel Cinematic Universe member Xóchitl Gomez and pro-skater Louie Lopez. It’s an immersive plunge into Cuco’s particular brand of West Coast vibes.

Ridin’ marks Cuco’s third album for Interscope following Para Mi and 2022’s Fantasy Gateway. He’s been widely acclaimed for his unique blend of psychedelic soul, bossa nova, and bedroom indie-pop, a sound he has referred to as “alternative dream pop.” The new album teams him with producer and Dap-Kings guitarist Tom Brenneck, a master of modern throwback soul known for his work on modern classics from Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars.

True to its title, car culture is a defining force on Ridin’. “Everybody listens to music when they’re driving,” Cuco says. “Music is a part of your commute, whether you’re in a good or bad mood. You’re ridin’ through the motion of your life where nothing is linear.” He elaborates on the new LP’s themes: “All of my songs here are romantic, where that’s in a super-animated way or sad and heartbroken.”

Born Omar Banos, Cuco first emerged a decade ago as a DIY teenage star. He’s collaborated with stars like Clairo, Kacey Musgraves, and the Marías and toured around the world, including appearances at major festivals like Primavera Sound and Coachella.
