Movie star and Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson has somewhat famously refused to take photos with fans in over the years, and her recent explanation of her reasoning has been going viral on social media for its humorous bluntness.
Scarlett Johansson, who has two movies releasing in the coming months — The Phoenician Scheme in May and Jurassic World: Rebirth in July — recently sat for an interview and detailed her thinking behind not wanting to take photos with fans despite the fact that she knows it “offends” people.
According to Johansson, what she tells people who come up to her and ask for a photo is that she is “not working” and therefore should be treated like a regular person and not a celebrity.
“It really offends a lot of people. It doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative, of course, that people are fans, or happy to see me. But I always say to people, ‘I’m not working,’” Johansson said in a recent interview with InStyle Magazine.
“[And that means] I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. I’m doing my own thing… I like to be in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me. I don’t like being self-conscious.”
Johansson’s use of the phrase “I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you” caught particular fire on social media, with many people jokingly claiming it’ll be something they’ll say in their own lives.

“‘I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you’ is one of the hardest, realest things anyone has ever said and it’s absolutely going to be my new go-to for getting out of things I don’t want to do,” read one tweet responding to ScarJo’s quote.
“‘I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you’ is my new response when I want to avoid a conversation with someone,” agreed another.
“’I don’t want to be identified in this time and place with you’ is instantly going into my Rolodex of ruthless insults,” a third concurred.
Johansson will next be seen starring in Wes Anderson’s newest film The Phoenician Scheme, hitting theaters on May 30, alongside the usual bevy of A-listers that appear in his films, such as Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Benedict Cumberbatch Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg and more.
Later this summer, she’ll also be headlining the upcoming Jurassic franchise soft reboot, Jurassic World: Rebirth. Alongside the Oscar-nominated Johansson, Jurassic World: Rebirth — directed by Godzilla and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards — also stars two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Ed Skrein.
Jurassic World: Rebirth will hit movie theaters in the United States on Wednesday, July 2. Check out the official trailer for the film below.
