TikTok makes big change to let you spy on other users – but not for everyone

TikTok is making a rather big change to its settings, allowing parents to spy on their children’s activity and stop them from using the app.

Over the last few years, social media platforms have been adding additional security features, especially for users who are under 18. We’ve seen things like screen time limits and blocking out certain pages all being popular.

TikTok has implemented a few of these, but it has been behind on some other popular security features.

Well, that is until now. The platform has revealed that they will now give parents the power to snoop on what TikTokers their children are watching and following, as well as limiting screen time.

TikTok’s Family Pairing lets you check who kids are following

That’s right, TikTok has announced that, starting immediately in Europe, they’re “enhancing” the family planning abilities with a Time Away and Family Pairing.

The latter will allow parents to see who their children are following on TikTok, and who follows them. There will also be the ability to see which accounts their teen has blocked.

“With increased visibility into their teen’s network, parents will be better equipped to have ongoing conversations and help their teens develop the digital literacy skills they need,” the platform said.

Family Pairing will let you look at some key detials on a TikTok account.

Time Away will allow parents to set a schedule as to when their children can access TikTok. This means blacking out the app when they’re at school. “Teens can request extra time, but parents make the final decision,” TikTok added.

These features are obviously targeted at teens and young adults, but they’re sneaky. They’ve probably got some burners set aside to avoid being watched.

As noted, the rollout is set to begin right away in Europe. However, those in the United States and further afield may have to wait just a little bit longer.
