Elton John & Brandi Carlile "Swing for the Fences" on New Song

Elton John and Brandi Carlile have joined forces for their new song, “Swing for the Fences,” the second preview of the pair’s upcoming album, Who Believes in Angels? Stream it below.

Described by Carlile as “an anthem for young gay kids out there,” the soaring track lives up to its name with sweeping guitars and rollicking piano. Encouraging listeners to not let anything hold them back, the song features lyrics like, “Don’t hold your shoulders like a high school dance/ A white flag holder in a hopeless romance/ Red light kids crossing over the line.”

“‘Swing for the Fences’ was a little gem I took into the studio with me: I’m a gay woman, Elton’s a gay man and we both have families, and our dreams have come true,” Carlile said in a statement. “I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool to write an anthem for young gay kids out there that calls them into a bigger, more elegant, more fabulous life.”

Elton added that the song was “the moment that crystallized where the album was going. It was hard to get to that point, but we knew we had to rise to the occasion and we all just felt this massive sense of joy and euphoria. After our initial difficulties, all the uncertainties started to dissipate when this song came together. It just sounded great.”

Who Believes in Angels? drops on April 4th (pre-order here) and features the previously released title track. In March, the duo will play “An Evening With Elton John & Brandi Carlile,” a one-night only concert at The London Palladium. Look for sold-out tickets here.

Earlier this week, John joined Chappell Roan on stage at his Oscars afterparty to perform “Pink Pony Club.” Meanwhile, Carlile is set to host her annual “Mothership Weekend” in May ahead of a summer UK/Europe tour. Tickets can be purchased here.
